The name and strength are only the beginning. Medicines need stricter packaging and labelling controls than ordinary consumer products \u2013 for good reason: A pack must allow healthcare professionals to identify the product, select it accurately, confirm its status and trace it through the supply chain. It must also provide clear information for appropriate use once the medicine leaves the pharmacy or hospital.<\/p><p>The statutory framework is set out mainly in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislation.gov.uk\/uksi\/2012\/1916\/part\/13\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Human Medicines Regulations 2012<\/a>. The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) approves packaging and labelling information for medicines sold in the UK and publishes guidance on readability, pack design and patient information leaflets. Parallel-imported medicines are also subject to relevant packaging and labelling requirements, including requirements specific to UK Parallel Import Licences (PLPIs).<\/p><p>A major recent change is the \u201cUK Only\u201d statement. It forms part of the arrangements introduced under the Windsor Framework and has been required on new packs placed on the UK market since 1 January 2025.<\/p><p>In this article, we explain the main requirements, how they appear on medicine packs and why they matter. We also provide a practical checklist for healthcare professionals reviewing a pack for dispensing, procurement or stock control.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7c201fc6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\" data-id=\"7c201fc6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"spacer.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer-inner\"><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-111535e3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"111535e3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What information must appear on medicine packaging in the UK?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1619fa9e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"1619fa9e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The main requirements are listed in\u00a0Regulation 257 and Schedule 24 of the <u>Human Medicines Regulations 2012<\/u>. The information generally appears on both the outer packaging and the immediate packaging. Reduced particulars apply to blister packs enclosed in a compliant carton and to immediate packaging that is too small for the full text.<\/p><p>The information must normally be in English. Other languages may also appear if the same particulars are presented in each language. The wording must be easy to read, understandable and permanent.<\/p><p>The principal pack elements include:<\/p><ul><li><strong>Medicine name: <\/strong>The authorised name of the medicinal product<\/li><li><strong>Strength and pharmaceutical form: <\/strong>For example, the amount of active substance and whether the medicine is supplied as tablets, capsules, solution or another form<\/li><li><strong>Intended age group: <\/strong>Where appropriate, the pack must state whether the product is intended for babies, children or adults<\/li><li><strong>Active substances: <\/strong>The pack must identify the active substances and state them quantitatively per dose unit, volume or weight, as applicable<\/li><li><strong>Pack contents: <\/strong>The quantity must be shown by weight, volume or number of doses<\/li><li><strong>Relevant excipients: <\/strong>All excipients must be listed for injectable, topical and eye preparations. Other products must declare excipients with a recognised action or effect, in line with applicable guidance<\/li><li><strong>Method and route of administration: <\/strong>The pack must explain how the medicine is administered and state the route where necessary<\/li><li><strong>Space for the prescribed dose: <\/strong>Must be provided where appropriate<\/li><li><strong>Child-safety warning: <\/strong>The packaging must state that the medicine should be kept out of the sight and reach of children<\/li><li><strong>Special warnings: <\/strong>Product-specific warnings must be included where required<\/li><li><strong>Expiry date: <\/strong>Must be stated clearly, normally by month and year<\/li><li><strong>Storage and disposal: <\/strong>Any special storage conditions and relevant disposal precautions must be shown<\/li><li><strong>Marketing authorisation holder: <\/strong>The name and address of the authorisation holder must<\/li><li>appear, together with the representative where applicable.<\/li><li><strong>Marketing authorisation number: <\/strong>The relevant UK authorisation number must be included.<\/li><li><strong>Batch number: <\/strong>The manufacturer\u2019s batch number supports product identification and<\/li><li><strong>Instructions for use: <\/strong>These are required on the packaging for products that are not<\/li><li>prescription-only medicines.<\/li><li><strong>Legal category: <\/strong>Pharmacy medicines carry \u201cP\u201d in a rectangle. Prescription-only medicines carry \u201cPOM\u201d in a rectangle.<\/li><li><strong>\u201cUK Only\u201d: <\/strong>This statement is required on applicable UK packs under the arrangements effective from 1 January 2025 <em>(more information on this below)<\/em><\/li><\/ul><p>A patient information<strong> leaflet<\/strong> must be included unless all required leaflet information appears on the outer or immediate packaging. In practice, it must help pharmacy and healthcare teams answer four immediate questions: What is this medicine? Is it the correct presentation? How should it be handled and supplied? These details need to be easy to find and read. For example, the same medicine may be available in several strengths or as both tablets and an oral solution. Prominent placement of the medicine name, strength and pharmaceutical form helps the pharmacist make the correct selection before dispensing. This includes prescription-only medicines, pharmacy medicines and general sales list medicines. Stock released under the previous rules before 1 January 2025 may continue to be supplied in the relevant territory until expiry.<\/p><p>The requirement was introduced alongside the disapplication of EU Falsified Medicines Directive safety-feature requirements in Northern Ireland, completing the UK-wide change. \u201cUK Only\u201d identifies the intended market; it does not perform an authentication function.<\/p><p>Have you still seen anti-tamper packaging since January 2025 and wondered why?
